Refreshing Ways to Enjoy Your Water and Reap the Health Benefits

We hear it all the time and especially during our hot Arizona summers.  You need to drink more water.  And the truth is that you do need more than the suggested eight glasses of water a day in order for your body to function properly.  Water flushes toxins from your body, carries nutrients to your cells, assists in healthy waste elimination, and helps maintain your energy levels.  Water makes up over 60% of your body weight and is an important ingredient in any weight loss plan.  We simply cannot live without it!

According to the Institute of Medicine the average intake of water suggested for men is 3 liters or 13 cups of water per day and for women 2.2 liters or 9 cups of water per day.  These suggestions do not take into consideration other factors such as exercise, the climate you live in, your health, and if you are pregnant or nursing.  All of these activities would require you to drink more water to replace the fluids you are depleting.  How do you know if you need to drink more?  If you are rarely thirsty and notice your urine in mostly colorless then you are probably getting enough fluid.  If you are still concerned you might not be getting enough fluids then you should see your doctor or a dietician to determine the amount of water that is right for you to be drinking.

I know for me it can be very hard to drink as much water as is suggested to me by my doctor, my health magazines, and the medical professionals on the evening news because it doesn’t taste good.  I am sure you, like most of my clients have the same problem too.

Here are some easy, all natural ways for you to enhance the flavor of your water;

*Add some fruit and not just your average lemon or lime.  Watermelon and orange slices add great flavor or muddle in some strawberries and blueberries for a refreshing berry taste.

*Fresh herbs and vegetables make delicious additions too.  Mint, basil, lemongrass, and lavender are all great and cucumber adds a light refreshing flavor.  If you want to get creative you can freeze the fresh herbs in ice cube trays so they are easy to grab whenever you need them.

*If you are craving a soda then you might want to try combining seltzer water with sugar free juice like cranberry or pomegranate.  Add some fresh fruit or lemon and your soda fizz craving has been conquered!
