Hormones Weighing You Down?

There are so many differences in training men and women and especially as my female clients approach perimenopause and menopause.  Suddenly it becomes harder to lose weight and most women find they gain between 10 and 20 pounds despite their efforts to diet and continue their cardio and weight training regimens.  This can be extremely frustrating to combat but is certainly not something you should accept.

In order to understand what is happening in your body during this change in your life you must first understand the delicate relationship between your hormones and fat cells.  Part of a system-wide biofeedback network, the balance between your hormones and fat cells directly influences your appetite, metabolism, heat regulation, digestion, and detoxification. Any changes in this love/ hate relationship can cause a major disturbance among systems and will cause weight gain, mood swings, hot flashes, and other menopausal symptoms.  Another factor to consider is how hormones influence insulin levels, metabolism, body fat and stress.  In fact, many doctors today are relating our low-fat/ high-carb diets to menopausal problems because these diets have caused many women to develop insulin resistance which causes weight gain by converting calories to fat.  Obviously there can be many more reasons why those pesky pounds aren’t going away but these two reasons can also be playing a part.  I would suggest seeing your doctor if you find yourself experiencing unexplained weight gain.  There are many ways to remedy these symptoms.

Although these factors are out of your control and may take a doctor’s help to fix, my advice to those going through these changes is not to give up or give in to accepting the weight gain.  Instead I suggest you using this time to rebuild or build a healthy foundation for your mind, body, and spirit.  This foundation, coupled with your doctor’s recommendations,  will help  lead to the weight loss you desire and it might take more time but understanding that balance is the key and living a less stressful lifestyle can be factors in your success as well.
